What is piriform sinus?

The piriform sinus is a small, pear-shaped cavity located in the throat, just above the esophagus. It is lined with squamous epithelium and communicates with the nasal cavity through the nasal pharynx. The piriform sinus plays an important role in the swallowing process, as it helps to guide food down the esophagus while preventing it from entering the trachea and lungs. It is also involved in the production of speech and plays a role in the sense of taste and smell. Dysfunction of the piriform sinus can lead to difficulty swallowing or aspiration, which can result in respiratory problems or aspiration pneumonia.
